Choosing Security Cameras for a Calgary Home

Start with PoE versus Wi-Fi

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cameras run a single cable for power and data, which means no batteries to charge, no Wi-Fi congestion, and a much more reliable connection than a wireless camera fighting for bandwidth with everything else in the house. Wi-Fi cameras are easier to add after the fact with no cabling, but they depend on your wireless network staying strong at every camera location, including outdoors. For a camera system you actually want to trust, PoE is almost always the better foundation, especially if it’s planned during structured wiring at framing stage.

NVR versus cloud-only storage

A local network video recorder (NVR) stores footage on hardware in your home, which means no ongoing subscription is required to review recordings and no dependence on an internet connection to capture footage. Cloud-only systems can be convenient but usually come with a monthly fee and a retention limit. We generally recommend a local NVR, sometimes paired with cloud backup for redundancy.

Resolution: more isn’t always better

Higher resolution matters for identifying faces or license plates at a distance, but it also means larger file sizes and more storage. The right resolution depends on the camera’s job: a wide driveway view benefits from higher resolution, while a covered entry a few feet from the lens does not need the same detail. We size resolution and storage to what each camera is actually watching.

Cold-weather ratings matter in Calgary

Not every camera marketed as "outdoor" is rated for a Calgary winter. Look for an appropriate operating temperature range and an IP-rated housing, and make sure the mounting location and cable path won’t trap moisture. We install cameras rated for the temperature swings this city actually gets, not just a marketing label. Chinooks make it worse, not better — a camera that survives a steady deep freeze can still struggle with the rapid freeze-thaw cycles and condensation that come with a Calgary chinook, so housing quality and seal integrity matter as much as the published temperature rating.

Placement and privacy

Camera placement should cover entries, driveways and blind spots without pointing into a neighbour’s yard or windows. We walk the property with you to plan angles that give you useful coverage while respecting your neighbours’ privacy, and we’ll tell you when a proposed location doesn’t make sense.

Which brand fits best depends on the property size, the number of cameras and whether the system needs to integrate with an existing network or smart-home platform.

Integrating cameras with the rest of the system

Cameras work best as part of a coordinated network rather than a standalone gadget on the Wi-Fi. Running camera cabling alongside networking during the same project means one properly sized network, one rack, and one system you can view from a single app or, for whole-home clients, alongside lighting and audio on the same control interface.

A simple way to plan coverage

Start by listing what actually needs to be seen: every entry door, the driveway or garage approach, and any blind corner around the house. Most homes need fewer cameras than people expect once entries and approaches are covered properly — quality placement of four or five cameras usually beats a dozen poorly aimed ones, and it keeps storage and monitoring manageable.
